The economic boom of the past
15 years put the golfing industry into overdrive. From a few golf
courses on the outskirts of Bangkok - owned by the Army, Navy, Air
Force, and State Railways of Thailand - golf spread out into pristine
hills and valleys of Phuket, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Nayok, and Pattaya -
numbering over 200 now.
World famous golfing personalities like Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Nick
Faldo
and Robert Trent Jones took part in the design of these courses.
Tiger Woods, the half-Thai American champion, made a triumphant return
to Thailand, winning the Honda Asian Classic at the Thai Country Club.

In every provincial town, the golf links are where Thailand's business
and political elite meet. Links range in quality form scrubby nine-hole
courses to luxuriously laid out fairways by world-class designers.
Such was the boom in golf course construction in the late 1980s that
supply has outstripped demand. Thus booking tee-times is usually
unnecessary, while green fees and caddy hire are a fraction of the cost
in Europe or Japan.
Like so many things that have been imported from overseas, golf has been
embraced by a growing number of Thai people, and they have adapted it
somewhat for Thai consumption. There is no question that golf overseas
would be amore rewarding game if it borrowed some of the good things
from the Thai game.
Caddies are a vital part of the Thai golf experience and they can be a
joy to be around. Some know the game well, others don't have clue, but
you never know which kind you will get so it certainly keeps you on your
toes!
Another Thai golfing tradition much appreciated by the visiting player
is the custom of having a drinks stop every three holes. They are an
absolutely essential part of Thai golf, and for a thirsty player in our
hot climate, these oases are a gift from the gods.
Clubhouses are refreshingly friendly and informal, too, particularly
with regard to dress code and sexual equality. Restaurants and bars in
Thai clubhouses welcome everyone, including women and children. |
