The province of Satun is located about
980 km south of Bangkok, on the west coast. It is surrounded by mountains to the east and
borders with Malaysia.
It has more than 60 offshore islands, amongst which are the beautiful islands of Ko
Turatao and Ko Adang-Rawi.
At the begining of the century it was under the adinistration of the Malaysian
state of Kedah. However, in 1909, afetr a treaty between Brtain and Thailand it became
under the authority of Phuket. Later on it was under the administration of Nakhon Si
Thammarat, until it finally gained provincial status in 1932.

Tarutao
National Park
This was the first marine park to be established in
Thailand, created by the government in 1974.
The park encompasses some 51 islands: including Koh Tarutao, which was once an
island prison for political prisoners and high security inmates.
The island is very mountainous and has many cliffs that offer perfect views and
many caves.
