Nakhon Nayok is a small province
located about 100km to the north east of Bangkok. The town of Nakhon Nayok dates back to
during the Dvaravati Period (6th -13th centuries), and later became a garrison town for
Ayutthaya in 1350.
The province covers just over 2000 sq km, which mainly contains forested hillsides
with many waterfalls. It also contains many botanical gardens which are the big suppliers
to the many floral shops in Bangkok. It is a popular retreat for the citizens of Bangkok,
for whom it is just a two hours drive away. Canoeing, walking and mountain biking are
popular activities to be enjoyed.
Places of Attraction
Wat Phramanee
This temple is located about 5 km from the centre of
Nakhon Nayok, along the Sarika Waterfall Road. It is close to a cemetery for Japanese
soldiers from World War Two. A memorial to the soldiers who perished during the war stands
inside the temples compound.
Ban Dong Lakon
This ancient settlement site is located about 9 km from
Nakhon Nayok. Excavations at the site have revealed that the walled settlemnet dates back
to during the Dvaravati Period (5th -10th centuries). Many of the religious artefacts,
including Buddha heads and jewellry, that were found here are on display in the National
Museum at Prachinburi.
Sarika Waterfall
This scenic waterfall is located about 15 km to
the east of Nakhon Nayok, just off Route 3050. The nine-levels of the falls flow down
through a forested hillside, and is a popular place for visitors.
Nang Rong Waterfall
The falls flow over large rocks and has a small pool at the
bottom, which is a pleasant spot for swimming. It is located along Route 3049.
Wang Takhrai
This botanical garden covers a large area and
contains camping facilities and bungalows. The gardens have been beautifully landscaped
with colorful and fragrant plants. Some waterways flowing through the complex offer a more
