Chumphon is derived
from the Thai, 'chumnumphon', which means 'meeting place'. It is known as the gateway to
the south and lies at the junction point where the southern highway divides, taking you
west to Ranong and the Andaman side of the peninsular or further south along the eastern
coast to Surat Thani and the deep south.
Paknam Chumphon is a large fishing village which lies about 11km to the southeast, at
the mouth of the Chumphon River. This is the major departing point for the boats that go
to Koh Tao, the popular island for diving, just north of Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan.
Nearby is Koh Rang Kachiu which is famed for its swallow nests, the chief ingredient for
the gourmets 'birds nest soup'. Although landing is restricted, permission can be granted
from the Laem Thong Bird Nest Company in Chumphon.
